Tom joined TER in 2024 after completing his PhD at Murdoch University (Australia). His doctoral work assessed the impact of an invasive plant pathogen (Phytophthora cinnamomi) to a digging mammal (bandicoot), highly diverse plant communities, and rhizosphere fungal diversity. This work involved aspects of botanical surveys, fauna tracking, glasshouse experiments, and DNA sequencing. He also worked briefly as a fire fighter for forest management authorities, giving him on-ground experience of natural disaster impacts and their management. In his current postdoctoral position, Tom is studying the community ecology of fungal endophytes from the leaf canopy to the ground floor in a 'cradle to grave' study spanning 14 European countries.
